It wasn’t too long ago before I embarked on this amazing designer journey, that I was much like my clients; obsessed with HGTV, and certain that interior design could really happen on a dime or in a 4 week timeframe, like magic . Fooey!
Let’s be honest.
Have you ever made any major investment in your life that hasn’t proven “you get what you pay for”? – whether or not you were on the more favorable side of that cliche, and actually invested a value equal to your expectations, I’m sure you are nodding your head in agreement .
Getting To Know You
Your home is one of the most important investments you will probably make in your life. Now, you’re considering bringing in an interior designer to give your home everything you ever wanted – an amazing kitchen to cook meals with your family, the most serene bedroom ever , or a luxe space where you can entertain and sip champagne with your favorite ladies !
No matter your desires, design is pretty personal . It’s all about you !
I believe in total transparency. It’s important that you are able to trust your designer to be around your family, manage your five to seven figure design budget appropriately, have great communication , and most importantly – match your design style !
Step 1 – The Discovery Call
At the Glass Touch, I emphasize communicating process, expectations, and building rapport at our very first interaction which is with our Discovery Call. This 30-minute call has been imperative for that mutual interview that both I and the prospective client are conducting to determine if we will be a good fit. During the discovery call we will briefly discuss your design project scope, your lifestyle, and the design process.
I want to note here that just because I speak with a prospective client doesn’t mean that I will take on the project. I’ve learned through experience that every call is not necessarily my ideal client, whether that’s because of availability , budget concerns, or the type of project. By the end of the call, if I believe we will be a good fit , I recommended to the client that we move on to the next step, the in-home consultation.
Step 2 – The Interior Design Consultation
Through experience I have learned that design consultations are invaluable to my clients. Most clients will go on to become full-service projects after the consultation, however a consultation is extremely beneficial for you if you want to go over some design ideas with an expert or need some light recommendations for your home design (e.g. paint, lighting, space planning, etc.). The design consultation helps you help save them money and avoid frustration by getting best practice recommendations upfront.
Each consultation typically includes some or all of the following, depending on your individual project needs:
– A walk through of your home and discussing each room’s function, the existing furniture pieces, and new furniture recommendations
– 2 hours of intensive and custom ideas
– Getting to know your needs through questions and answers
– Recommended furniture layout
– Defining the preliminary budget
– Paint color selections
– Window Treatment ideas
– Lighting ideas
– Styling tips and ideas for vignettes
– Ideas for mixing patterns
– Review of inspiration you are considering
Project Commencement
Every interior designer is different but I make sure to review my design contract during that 2-hour consultation word-by-word (yes!) . I find this really helps clients understand everything that goes on behind the scenes, how much time is required , and to put any worries at ease once they hear how streamlined my design process is to provide them an optimal client experience.
In addition, I normally request that all decision makers are at this consultation to ensure everyone has their questions answered.
If you are reading this and already have your consultation booked , make sure you have your checkbook ready ! After going over ideas and how turn-key their project will be most clients are eager to get started right away, and so am I !
This is just phase 1 of our full-service design process. Hop over to phase two in our Working with an Interior Designer Series for the scoop on how your design comes together .
